The Campo del Cielo refers to a group of iron meteorites that are found in an area of the same name about 1000 km northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina, between the provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero.
The field of impact craters covers an area of 3 km X 20 km and the site contains at least 26 craters, the largest measuring 115 m X 91 m. The craters’ age is estimated as 4000 to 5000 years old.
The craters, containing iron fragments, were reported in 1576, but were already well known to the area’s aboriginal inhabitants
